Up One

This is SO Not Funny

At some point in our youth
we quit pretending it's all
a gas. We wake up one day
and see with seminal clarity
that what we were trying
to make into comedy is in
fact pure and epic tragedy.
No matter who or what
we are on this once-green
earth, day in and day out
we put up with these Conditions
of Tragedy, feeling obliged
to love the roller-coaster ride
of our experience, pretending
we're not terrified at every turn,
at every sudden rise or fall,
making it seem as if we've grown
accustomed to the brick wall
we're destined to hit one day.
So it's not all fun and games.
So it's worse than the most
awful tragedies ever written.
So what? So I want to know
who's responsible for all
the wicked rumors, beds of
roses, pots of gold at the ends
of rainbows, dreamscapes
of pulchritude beyond imagination
just awaiting our attention.
Who'll take the fall for
making the vulnerable among us
believe there was any comedy to this
at all? Where are all the good times
promised us for our lengthy trip to meet
the wizard? The only funny thing I see
is my growing suspicion that I
am in fact the only wizard
(so to speak) pulling any strings
in this bizarre Oz of a life.
Walking around trying to find
someone to blame and all along
it's been me I was looking for.
Imagine that. Me, a wizard.
I should see if I can get a show
on Comedy Central.
