The Worst is for the Worst

Our human ways are often so base
as to appear subhuman. Imagine
the worst sort of behavior you
could possibly witness, and,
some day, you will witness it.
Brothers will kill each other.
Disabled people will be
abandoned by their spouses,
just because. Kith and kin will
remember the world however they
see fit, to protect their own outlooks,
to cling to power, to still be kings.
All this worst-ness will show itself
time and again, to the tune
of a sickeningly sweet fanfare.
The worst of us, though,
terrible in inexplicable ways,
will be forced to bear witness
all alone, no one to commiserate
with, no one to remember
the Truth with, no one to giggle
with about some stupid move
made decades ago. Stupid moves,
solitude, and the hopeful actions
of a guileless heart will be all you
can remember. You will come
to live by the knowledge that
no matter where you are, whom
you're with, or what you're doing,
things can always get worse. And
they will. Just for you.
